Saadani River Lodge, Tanzania

Saadani National Park is one of the only remaining protected coastal areas in Africa. The park covers 1100 square kilometres and is the only wildlife sanctuary in Tanzania that borders the sea.
Saadani River Lodge is a river retreat overlooking this reserve. Concealed by trees bordering the Wami River, this innovative luxurious lodge sprung from the need to conserve the indigenous flora and fauna of the southern banks of the Wami River, and uses sustainable tourism to protect the sensitive environment from the ravages of poaching. Effortlessly fusing with the natural surrounds, the luxurious Saadani River Lodge offers a heavenly setting with an abundance of wildlife and spectacular scenery of river, bush and ocean.

Saadani River Lodge offers seventeen treetop timber suites, and a private villa. Each of the seventeen stilted suites epitomise luxury, and feature a secluded balcony, a four-poster bed facing large windows through which there are stunning river views, and a large bathroom offering forest views from the tub. Subtle earthy tones and swathes of white fabric create a light and airy ambience.
Hidden in the lush tropical vegetation, River Lodge’s Wami Suite is the ultimate in luxury. This private villa has its own infinity pool, two bedrooms and bathrooms, and a sumptuous living room and dining room.

The varied ecosystems: savannah, estuarine, and marine, mean a huge biodiversity of animal and bird life. The Saadani National Park features about 30 species of larger mammals as well as many reptiles and birds, whilst the Indian Ocean is home to many species of fish, dolphins and the humpback whale. Wildlife includes large numbers of hippo, crocodile, giraffe, buffalo, warthog, zebra, gazelle, waterbuck, reedbuck, hartebeest, wildebeest, yellow baboons and vervet monkeys. Predators include lion, leopard, spotted hyena and black-backed jackal, and sightings of the rare colobus monkey and endangered Roosevelt’s sable frequently occur during game drives.
Saadani River Lodge is a bird watcher’s paradise, offering a huge diversity of jungle, woodland, estuarine, and marine species. There are frequent sightings of Fish eagle, Black kite, Cuckoo hawk, Lanner falcon, Lesser kestrel, Purple heron, Brown-necked parrot, Ringed plover, Long-crested eagle, pelicans and Greater flamingo.
